The Lives of Deaf Mexicans: Struggle and Success Description:Deaf people in Mexico are part of a rich culture that is fraught with educational setbacks, communication obstacles, and limited employment opportunities. With 30 Deaf babies born in Mexico daily and the lack of governmental support for Deaf education, the majority of Deaf Mexicans end up staying home to help support their families instead of going to school. In this first-ever videotaped account of Deaf Mexicans and their stories, viewers are provided with a compelling look at the Deaf Mexican community.Struggling with inequality in their daily lives, Deaf Mexicans share tales in this unique 45-minute, subtitled and voiced-over documentary. Their stories illustrate a stark reality: there are minimal educational or employment opportunities for Deaf Mexicans, resulting in a lower quality of life. They also share their frustrations about the government's lack of recognition of Mexican Sign Language. Viewers take a rare look at classrooms with deaf students and interviews with parents, teachers and Deaf Mexicans. Successful Deaf Mexicans are also profiled, including a taxi driver, a convenience store owner, draftsmen, and a tailor.
